Worship at Congregation B'nai Shalom
At Congregation B'nai Shalom we celebrate Shabbat together every Friday evening and Saturday morning. We welcome you, and look forward to having you join us in prayer. We come together as one community but each of us enters the sanctuary with different needs and experiences. Our schedule offers a range of worship styles and opportunities, while maintaining a core liturgy and range of melodies to enable everyone to gain familiarity with the prayers over time. From time to time we offer classes and workshops to help congregants gain confidence in worship participation and learn new skills, such as being called up for an Aliyah (blessing over the Torah), or reading Torah. Please contact or call 508-366-7191 if you have any questions about worship.
Friday Evening Worship:
Shabbat Rishon, 6:45 p.m: Our first Friday of the month is a Family service, especially suitable for families with children in Third through Eighth Grade, but welcoming to all ages. We frequently have Grade level family dinners prior to the service at 5:45 p.m. – a wonderful way to get to know other families in the community.
Torah Reading Shabbat, 7:30 p.m: On the third Friday of the month we have an interpretative Torah reading in lieu of a sermon. An opportunity for congregants – adults and teens – to read a few verses of Torah, try their hand at a d'var torah (a short teaching from the week's portion), and involve the congregation in other interactive experiences that emerge from the themes of the parsha hashavua – the weekly Torah portion.
Ritual Lab Shabbat, 7:30 p.m: The fourth Friday of the month is the week to expect the unexpected. It is an opportunity to try different musical styles, creatively themed worship, and more. Examples include a July 4th Celebratory service, a ‘Blue Jeans Shabbat' celebrating the end of the Summer, a Thanksgiving Shabbat in Rhythm, and a Song of Songs Shabbat.
On all other weeks of the month, Friday evening worship is held at 7:30 p.m. and is a blend of English, Hebrew, spoken and sung, with sermons addressing contemporary issues and recent events of importance in our lives. Every service is followed by an Oneg Shabbat dessert reception which includes allergy-sensitive foods.
Saturday Morning Worship:
Torah and Tefilah, 8 – 9:30 a.m: Join our community minyan every Shabbat morning. We begin with opening prayers, spend close to an hour studying together, and then close with an abbreviated morning tefilah. A number of years ago, the community started ‘in the beginning' with Genesis and they just kept on going. We're in the Books of Kings now, but you can jump in at any point! All text study is in English.
B'nai Mitzvah Celebratory Worship, 10:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m: Please consult our online calendar to see when these services are scheduled. All are welcome to attend. We pray together as a community, led in part by our bar or bat mitzvah. Additionally, the Bar and/or Bat Mitzvah will read and teach from the Torah portion of the week.
Our festival prayers are wonderful community occasions, often accompanied by festival meals. These include a wide range of offerings during the High Holydays, with worship for different ages and different styles. We celebrate Sukkot in our community Sukkah, unroll the entire Sefer Torah on Simchat Torah and dance to the sounds of our festival band, come together for a Purim Shpiel (play) with plenty of opportunity for congregational participation, and much more. Please consult our online calendar for dates, times and further information.
