Alizée Benoit, an American painter working for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), vanishes in 1940 NYC. No one–her Jewish family in France, her patron Eleanor Roosevelt, or artist friends–knows what happened to her. 70 years later, her great-niece finds some Expressionistic paintings and begins to track down her mysterious aunt’s story. The novel mixes historical and fictional characters and time periods, including the plight of European refugees refused entrance to the US.
