Why is an Oneg important at Congregation B'nai Shalom?
The meaning of Oneg is "delight." By lingering, chatting and noshing after Friday evening's service, we add to the feeling of the Sabbath as being different from the rush of the other days of the week. An Oneg also allows us as a community to share the Sabbath's joy in a relaxed setting and provides congregants and guests a valuable weekly opportunity for fellowship.
Who is responsible to help?
Hosting an Oneg is an important responsibility for each of our congregant households. To ensure equal participation, the responsibility is rotated amongst our 400+ households. 4 Households are specifically assigned by the temple's office per Oneg date. Hosting an Oneg every few years is one vital way to show your commitment to our community.
Can I select an Oneg date to co-host?
Absolutely! You may volunteer to CO-host an Oneg on a specific date by completing the Oneg Host form.
What duties are co-hosts expected to do?
Co-hosting an Oneg is fun, rewarding, and now easier than ever since Sisterhood members are helping Oneg hosts every step of the way. For complete Co-host duties and timelines see the Oneg Checklist. Briefly, Co-hosts are asked to:
- Provide a quality food item(s) like baked goods, cheese/crackers, humus/pita, veggies/dip or cut fruit that feeds 25 people (about 2-3 dozen pieces).
- Arrive 30 minutes before the start of Friday's service to help set-up the Social Hall.
- Enjoy the Oneg
- Stay about 30 minutes after the Oneg to help clean-up the Social Hall/Kitchen.
What is the new "Oneg Sponsor" program?
While Co-hosting an Oneg is an obligation of our members, congregants can now choose to support our Onegs as a "sponsor". A sponsor provides a $54 donation to help build the Sisterhood fund which enhances weekly Onegs (e.g. serve freshly brewed coffee, have flowers, add variety to the food selections). While a $54 donation is greatly appreciated, we hope sponsors will consider adding one or more special touches to a specific Oneg date such as bringing a special food item(s), helping with the setup/cleanup, providing decorative item(s) (e.g. flowers, paper goods, etc.) or increasing their monetary donation.
Can sponsors select a specific Oneg date to sponsor?
Absolutely! What a nice way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, baby naming, engagement, graduation, b'nai mitzvah, conversion, marriage, new job, promotion, new home, or award/achievement. Come celebrate simchas , special occasions, and other milestones with your temple family!
How do you sponsor an Oneg?
It's easy! Complete the Oneg Sponsor Form and a Sisterhood member will be in contact.
