Wednesday, May 31st. Yizkor at 6:30pm, special program at 7:15.
Modern Life as a Jew in the Antipodes, with Jonathan Barnett (Past President of Congregation B’nai Shalom)
Did you know the first Jewish Barnett was transported to Botany Bay on the first fleet in 1788, for stealing a tablecloth?
There are now over 100,000 Jews living in Australia, about 50,000 live in Melbourne. The vast majority of Melbourne Jewry arrived here after the Holocaust; which strongly shapes the community. The Reform proportion (Progressive in the local vernacular) comprise about 20 % of the total and are under the roof body, Progressive Judaism Victoria (PJV, of which Jonathan is the current President). The PJV includes five congregations (ranging from 2000 families to 20), an 800 children school, a burial society, and Netzer, the Progressive Zionist youth group.
Jonathan will talk about his adventures since joining the community seven years ago, the life of a Progressive Jew where we are a small but vocal minority, and daily issues like deciding which footy team to barrack for and challenges of sharing our social justice values with the broader Jewish community.
This program will begin an ice-cream sundae social immediately following the Yizkor (memorial) service which is at 6:30pm.
RSVP appreciated to help us order enough ice cream!
