Brit Olam: Your Commitment to Making a Difference

Make a difference in the New Year! Sign a Brit Olam

It’s the start of the Jewish new year, and the beginning of Congregation B’nai Shalom’s 40th anniversary commemoration– what better time to reflect on where we’ve been and resolve to make the future brighter?

We invite all CBS members to join in a new social action initiative by signing a personal or family “brit olam” – a promise to the world. The idea is very simple. Commit to doing one action between now and next April to change or help heal the world. Even better, do this together with others and multiply your impact.

Not sure what you’d like to do? We can help! The CBS Social Action Committee will maintain a menu of mitzvah opportunities and can help match you up with others who share your interests.

Here are some upcoming opportunities that we or our members are offering:

January 21st, 9:30-12:30  Dr MLK Jr Day of Service and Celebration, hosted at Westborough High School

We are now just over two weeks away from our area's first community MLK Jr Day of Celebration, taking place on Monday, January 21, 9:30-12:30pm, hosted at Westborough High School. The event is co-sponsored by Central MA Connections in Faith, Westborough Connects, Westborough Public Schools, and the Westborough Interfaith Clergy Association. Funding for this program has been provided by the Lilly Endowment and by Islamic Relief.

The event is aimed at adults and youth, and will feature the following elements throughout the morning:

  • Come hear "Free Hugs Guy" Ken E. Nwadike Jr. deliver the keynote address.
  • Listen to middle and high school students read excerpts from their winning essays.
  • Enjoy music and song led by Westborough Resident Luanne Crosby.
  • Take part in a community art project. Once completed, the project will travel around Westborough throughout 2019.
  • Participate in facilitated community conversation circles and reading activities.

Attendees are asked to bring a toiletry item for donation. Donations of chapstick, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap, liquid hand soap, shaving cream or deodorant are greatly appreciated and will be collected during the Community Art Project. The Toiletry drive will benefit the Westborough Food Pantry. For more information on this event, click HERE to view the press release or visit westboroughconnects.org/programs. You can let us know that you plan to come, and help spread the word to your own networks, via our Facebook event page.

February 3, 8:30-10am SOCIAL ACTION BRUNCH, Community Room at Congregation B'nai Shalom

The B'nai Shalom Social Action Committee is sponsoring a Family Social Action Breakfast on Sunday, February 3rd, from 8:30 am to 10 am. The purpose of the breakfast is to help organize social action volunteer activities for families with young or school age children to participate in as a family. We'd like to establish a monthly calendar of volunteer activities for families, some at the Temple, some outside of the Temple at social service organizations or other places where families can do good in the community.

If you think you'd like to get involved in social action with your children and family, or simply want to connect with like-minded families who share that interest, come enjoy bagels, lox, and other homemade goodies with us. No strings attached – we promise!
Hope to see you there!

We’ll be sharing our efforts on Instagram (so snap those selfies while you’re out doing good!), and will celebrate all that we’ve accomplished with an exhibit and video in May. Request to follow CBSBritOlam on Instagram and we'll approve all members to follow and post.

We hear a lot about how much is wrong in the world – imagine how much we could contribute to what’s right by taking action together. Fill in the form below to sign your brit olam and join us!
