Brit Olam: Your Commitment to Making a Difference

Make a difference in the New Year! Sign a Brit Olam

It’s the start of the Jewish new year, and the beginning of Congregation B’nai Shalom’s 40th anniversary commemoration– what better time to reflect on where we’ve been and resolve to make the future brighter?

We invite all CBS members to join in a new social action initiative by signing a personal or family “brit olam” – a promise to the world. The idea is very simple. Commit to doing one action between now and next April to change or help heal the world. Even better, do this together with others and multiply your impact.

Not sure what you’d like to do? We can help! The CBS Social Action Committee will maintain a menu of mitzvah opportunities and can help match you up with others who share your interests.

Here are some upcoming opportunities that we or our members are offering:

KINDNESS WEEK: A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION OF KINDNESS, presented by Westborough Connects

The "Kickoff to Kindness" event will take place on Sunday, April 7th, from 2-5pm at the Mill Pond School. This event is FREE and geared toward community members of all ages! The event will feature speaker, Megan Murphy, founder of The Kindness Rocks Project, and an interactive community drum circle with Dave "Drumhead" Curry. Various kindness-related activities will be featured, including painting kindness rocks, chalking the outdoor walkways with positive and uplifting messages, playing "Catch with a Cop," a "Knitting for Neighbors" knitting circle, writing kindness cards, the Westborough Public Library's "Kindness-Themed" Mobile Library, and more!

Treats from Uhlman's Ice Cream and Yummy Mummy will be available along with other refreshments. The Westborough Women's Club will host a food drive to benefit the Westborough Food Pantry - attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable item to be donated.

Throughout the week of April 7th-13th, Westborough Connects will partner with other Westborough organizations and businesses to create small events and initiatives that will promote community bonding around the theme of kindness.

SAVE THE DATE! Family Social Action Group Manageable Mitzvah, Sunday, April 28, 11:30 am – 12:45 pm at CBS

Join the Family Social Action Group at CBS to help pack backpacks with critically-needed supplies for families in Syrian refugee camps. We will provide lunch, watch a short, age-appropriate film about one refugee child’s experience, pack supplies, and write cards to the refugee families. Those who choose to do so may contribute to the cost of backpack supplies. Our backpacks will be combined with those made by other congregations in Massachusetts, and Jewish Family Services of MetroWest and the Multifaith Alliance will send them to refugee families. Stay tuned for further details soon; contact Amy Rosenberg or Mason Haber with questions.

We’ll be sharing our efforts on Instagram (so snap those selfies while you’re out doing good!), and will celebrate all that we’ve accomplished with an exhibit and video in May. Request to follow CBSBritOlam on Instagram and we'll approve all members to follow and post.

We hear a lot about how much is wrong in the world – imagine how much we could contribute to what’s right by taking action together. Fill in the form below to sign your brit olam and join us!
