Sukkot Evening Service and Program: Creating Inclusive Booths

Sunday, September 23, 2018 14 Tishrei 5779

7:00 PM - 9:30 PMSocial Hall

In addition to Sukkot, we have the opportunity to occupy the booths again this coming November (voting booths). In Massachusetts, there will be a ballot initiative that could roll back a law that has not created any issues and has provided protections for people who are transgender in public accommodations such as restaurants, hotels, movie theaters, bathrooms, and stores. This Erev Sukkot we will have the opportunity to hear from our congregant, Sarah Kipp, about her TransJewish project, providing a resource for communities and Jews who are transgender to create an inclusive spiritual home in Jewish congregations. We will hear from Sarah as the parent of a teen who is transgender. Sarah will be joined by Jake Bogner, member of Congregation B’nai Israel in Bridgeport, CT, who is featured in the TransJewish video project, and by Elijah Cohen-Gordon, who grew up here and transitioned in his early teens. Come and learn from Jews who are transgender about their journeys so that we can better understand the issues and become allies and advocates who will vote “YES” on the ballot initiative and help encourage others to do likewise.
