The Rise of Hate in America - How did we get here? What can we do?

We have seen in recent years a dramatic rise in anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, anti-LBGTQ+, and other hate-related incidents and acts of violence, many with horrific consequences. The experts on this panel will help program participants better understand the complex factors behind this alarming trend, as well as provide ideas and tools for responding constructively within our communities.

SPEAKERS

Dr. Arie Perliger is Director of the graduate program in security studies at the School of Criminology and Justice Studies, University of Massachusetts Lowell and an expert in the study of terrorism and political violence.

Melissa Kraus is the Associate Regional Director for the Anti-Defamation League of New England. Her work centers around incident response, programming, and community outreach.

Alejandro Beutel is a Research Analyst, recently at the Southern Poverty Law Center, where he focused on the U.S. anti-Muslim and anti-government movements.

Congressman James McGovern has represented MA District 2, covering the Greater Worcester area in Congress since 1996. He became chair of the House Rules Committee in 2018.
