As part of our 40th Anniversary celebrations, we welcome guest Artist-in-Residence, Susan Leviton, along with Lauren Brody for a special night of world music. Join them on a musical magic carpet ride as they present songs and instrumental music in Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, Russian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Macedonian and English with audience participation! Two vocalists, accordion and piano accompaniment, ‘surprise local stars,' engaging anecdotes, and sing-along materials - what more could you wish for in a concert to lift you into another realm? Lauren and Susan have been performing together around the United States and into the Caribbean for over a decade, and they bring their deep historic and linguistic integrity and musical depth to audiences who are astonished by their gifts.

ABOUT SUSAN LEVITON

Susan Leviton’s joyful embrace of Yiddish arts is matched only by her enthusiasm in sharing that joy.   Known to some as an interpreter of Jewish songs and to others as a master calligrapher, Susan continually break new ground in the desire to uncover historic forms and bring them into the shining light of the 21st Century.   Susan taught yearly at KlezKamp for over 20 years until the program concluded, and has also been a presenter at the Yiddish Book Center, Ashkenaz Festival, KlezFest in Yvpatoria, Crimea, and countless colleges, synagogues, and Jewish communities around the United States. Among artists with whom Susan has appeared are Zalmen Mlotek, Jake Shulmen Ment, Joyce Rozensweig, Lauren Brody, The Klezmatics, Adrian Brody, Michael Winograd and Dan Kahn. Susan’s two solo recordings, Zingendik! and Deep Skies, have been critically acclaimed and are widely played on radio programs around the world. Her recorded work the Old World Folk Band is also cherished by listeners.

ABOUT LAUREN BRODY

Lauren Brody has been a pioneer in both the Balkan and Yiddish music scenes in the United States. She was a member of Kapelye, Mikveh, Merak, Novo Selo, Pitu Guli, Yuri Yunakov Ensemble and Ivan Milev Balkan Folk Band.  Lauren has performed with Joel Grey, Ron Rivkin, Joel Rubin, David Krakauer, Andy Statman, Alicia Svigals, The Klezmatics, Theodore Bikel, Adrienne Cooper, and Petar Ralchev among others. She has appeared in the feature films “The Chosen” and “Over the Brooklyn Bridge”. 

Lauren is a Fulbright scholar, and she has issued two important collections of 78rpm historical recordings from Bulgaria: “Song of the Crooked Dance” Yazoo Records, 1998, and “Outsinging the Nightingale” – Lost Treasures of Bulgaria music (4 CDs), JSP records 2010.
